Music speaks a universal language
so even if you don't understand the words
the music itself is words to the body - to the soul
so when people listen to the music not only do they hear with their ears
but with their soul
that's the magic power of music - to transcend language colour and creed
Born from the ashes of the Ship Of Fools (two interesting albums in the shiny wake connecting Floyd to Ozric Tentacles via Hawkwind) and produced by Mandragora's Simon Williams, Nine Invisibles take the torch from early Nineties free festival bands to set fire to a fuel derived from the most evolved experiments on rhythms heard in the most recent seasons, from FSOL to Divine Soma Experience to Loop Guru. If the debt with the Ozric / Ullulators family is very apparent in the propelling space dubs of "King Dubby" and "Gondwanaland", while Simon Williams' hand is evident in the sparkling contortions of "Social Narcotics", tracks like "Gliding Silently" and "Power From The Sun" unleash vibrations of the most pregnant up-to-dateness, taking advantage in the latter case of the engaging vocal interpretation by Pat Fulgoni (Kava Kava, Urfaust), absolute protagonist as always. A beautiful double strike for those who will abandon themselves to the ecstasy of synthetic trance during springtime nights...
Nine Invisibles rose from the ashes of space-rock supremos Ship of Fools who sadly couldn't survive the post-CJA festival pogroms. Bit of a bummer, but the Nine Invisibles keep the flag flying with a swirling headfeast of dub and ambient stuff. Kind of samey in places, but certain conditions require it.
Not surprisingly, Nine Invisibles continues and develops the sonic exploration initiated by Ship of Fools but dubbed up! A fifteen track album of essentially pulsating ambient-trance-dub. My personal faves are King Dubby, a powerful blend of space-rock, dub, chanting and tribal rhythms, Gliding Silently, a bass/flute flowing ethereal wave of sound elegance, the sub-sonic bass driven ambient sound of Meltdown best described as a dubbed-out System 7, a spaced-out Hawkwind vibe on Power From The Sun with its beautifully mind lulling, cavernous sound and the dubbed-up-to-the-max tribal trance of Dolphin. A highly recommended brainstorming debut!
They call it Tribernetics - it's some kind of space fueled trip hop that's evolved out of the ashes of Ship of Fools - it's a mellow Ozrics meets Aphex Twin with some free festi smells and more than a hint of the legendary Webcore or Ullulators in their instrumental grooves - that and Transglobal Underground - yeah, there are a lot of tasty names you can drop whilst talking about the mellow laid back coiled sounds of Nine Invisibles, but they've got some class in there and some vital X Factor and it's never as obvious as my lazy name dropping suggests - this glides along with some nice tribal drive for the Internet generation - It's got a warm glow. Check it out.
This band contains a member from one of my favourites - Ship Of Fools. It shows a lot of similarities - as well as differences! The Hawkwind and Ozrics references have been replaced with much more chilled grooves that push this along. It might not be full on dance floor, but it defies you to stay still! I suppose that's what you get with a drummer as the main songwriter.
