Zuvuya have been moving and shaking the underground dance / tribal groove scene since the nascent days of Club Dog.
As Webcore Paul, Phil and Mick infused early Club Dogs with their psychedelic pagan head music. They then went their seperate ways. Paul continued his side project Another Green World, playing regular Whirlygig and ULU slots whilst gigging around the country and releasing cassettes through ambient outlets and mail order. Meanwhile, Phil headed out with his new band Tribal Drift, their rhythmic didgeridoo trances attracting the attentions of Nation Records, who released a 12" single "Like This", in May 1992.
Eventually the trio teamed up again as Zuvuya, combining Paul's ambience with Phil's rhythms, and Mick's strange, poetic vocals.
Their first release as Zuvuya was with Nation, "Grabbing Nandi By The Horn". Promoted through the underground / progressive club circuit, it caused, many a solar plexus to stir into motion, creating a genuine buzz around the band. The excitement increased when people finally got a look at them live on the Global Sweatbox Tour (who also featured "Nandi" on their album), and regularly at Megadog, Whirlygig and Megatripolis.
Keen experimentation with hallucinogens, Zuvuya inevitably came into contact with the now infamous Terence McKenna, who had been experimenting with the properties and effects of the most powerful of all psychedelic, D.M.T. Terence met with Zuvuya and put his DMT experiences and visions down on tape which the band then wrote backing music for. The result was the "Dream Matrix Telemetry" album on the young Delerium label and shortly after its release an enthusiastic John Peel requested a session which was broadcast in April '94.
Moving along from the psychedelic world of Terence McKenna, Zuvuya have recorded another album for Delerium. Stylistically in the bands more upfront and familiar tribal dance style, "Shamania" is due for release in early September. A single from the album "Shaman I Am", again features Terence McKenna, but mostly Zuvuya's twisted trance grooves.
They will tour the UK in late July / early August with two ultra-violet acrobatic dancing girls, and Neil Sparks from Trans-Global Underground adding his distinctive percussion. Zuvuya will also play on the Whirlygig stage at the Womad festival on 22nd July.
Planet Dog are also working with Zuvuya and are planning a new album, "Quadruped" to be released later in this year. The double album will feature four bands (one side each).
