Since 1991, when Delerium records released their debut double album On The Sunday Of Life... - a sprawling and diverse mix of material, recorded by a teenage Steven Wilson in the late '80s - Porcupine Tree have achieved widespread acclaim.
1992's epic Voyage 34 - a half hour blend of ambient rave textures and staggering space-rock wrapped around a neat LSD trip theme - gained the band a healthy underground following.
June 1993 saw the release of the album Up The Downstair which was greeted with rapture, Melody Maker even describing it as "a psychedelic masterpiece... one of the albums of the year". In November of 1993 Voyage 34 was reissued. Without any reviews it entered the NME indie chart for six weeks and also became an underground chill-out classic. By December 1993 Porcupine Tree had become a live unit featuring, in addition to Steve Wilson, Colin Edwin (bass), Chris Maitland (percussion) and Richard Barbieri (keyboards).
Having become firm favourites of Mark Radcliffe they recorded a BBC Radio One session, before embarking on selective live dates in the UK and Netherlands through to the end of 1994, when a new single Moonloop was issued, which again charted and received praise from numerous sources all over Europe.
Early in 1995, following another Mark Radcliffe session, Porcupine Tree released The Sky Moves Sideways. An expansive soundscape of melody and ambient rock experimentation, it also entered the NME, Melody Maker and Music Week charts. Together with the Moonloop EP, this album was issued in America in the Autumn and to date has attracted very favourable press on both sides of the Atlantic. On the live front, Porcupine Tree supported the album with numerous gigs throughout the year at major venues in the UK. They also did two tours of The Netherlands, a tour of Italy (with two sold out nights at the 1,000 plus capacity "Palladium" in Rome) and a one off sell out gig in Athens, Greece (at the Rodon Club, capacity 1,500).
May 1996 saw the release of the single Waiting which entered all indie charts and the National chart attracting airplay all over the UK. IT was followed by Signify the first album to fully reflect the powerful live sound of the band, blending together numerous rock, avant garde styles whilst absorbing many diverse influences and relying on none. A large amount of major European Press followed the release, with the UK's Q Magazine describing Signify as "a powerful album", Porcupine Tree then went on to complete a highly successful UK tour before visiting Greece for more gigs in November of 1996.
Porcupine Tree continued to increase their popularity abroad during 1997 . They played to an audience of over 5,000 in Rome over three nights - all of which were recorded for the 1997 live album Coma Divine - and appeared on the premier Italian national TV station RAI UNO as part of the SAN REMO ROCK FESTIVAL. In late 1997 the band's first three albums were remastered and reissued. Signify also saw a release in the USA on Miles Copeland's ARK 21 label. At home, meanwhile, they were booked to headline the ill-fated Avalon Stage at Glastonbury mud-fest '97.
1998 saw the band continue to gig steadily aacrossEurope, with sell out shows in Poland, Greece and Italy, and in the Autumn they returned to the studio to record their fifth studio album 'Stupid Dream' - an ambitions project featuring a twenty-five piece orchestra, that reflected the bands move towards a more song based sound. Late that year they signed to the international Snapper/K-Scope label, and in March of 1999 Stupid Dream was issued wworld-wide supported by a lengthy tour of the UK, Italy, Greece, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, France, Poland and the USA. Singles taken from the album - Piano Lessons, Stranger By The Minute and Pure Narcotic - achieved mainstream exposure in the USA and in Europe, and all three appeared well placed in the UK independent charts. The album was widely praised.
Having built up an impressive grass roots following all over Europe and in the USA, Porcupine Tree are set to explode in the year 2000. Already hard at work on new material with Dave Gregory of XTC, the release of their new album in MAY 2000 promises to be a major musical event...
