On Trial were formed by the great garage rock god in the sky over ten years ago as a punky garagewave reaction to swedish bands such as The Nomads and Leather Nun. After releasing a well received 7" single in 1989 they went on in 1991 to produce their first album on small Copenhagen underground label Snogrock. The record gained very good reviews, and quickly elevated them into the status of one of the better known acts on the Danish Underground scene. Following the albums release, the band went on a tour of Scandanavia and Denmark with The Nomads.
Four years of touring, rehearsing and relentless psychedelic drug abuse saw an new On Trial sound being born. It had grown groovier, heavier and intensely psychedelic - year by year - until they had fashioned a style closer to Rock Erickson's 13th Floor Elevators than any other band has ever managed to achieve. Blending this ability with their own brand of stoner-rock inspired by Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath, The Stooges and MC5 they produced enough new material for their own underground label Omnium records. Seventy Kilometres of Underwater Nothingness Kaptain (SKUNK) set the path for the future of On Trial by its success and has now become a major collectors item. The Danish press weren't sure what to think of the release, because it was so unlike any other Danish bands of that time, but they knew it was too good for Denmark alone. With the ability to put on an amazing live show, On Trial then toured arond Europe where they were signed up for their third album by the German label Rebel Records / SPV. Again, choosing to record in their home studio, they managed to achieve a sound so close to the garage psych of the late sixties that it was impossible to tell from which era their sound was coming from: The resulting masterpiece of psychedelia, the album Head Entrance was complete, but because of poor distribution and promotion was virtually unknown outside of Germany. When Delerium Records discovered it they were so blown away that they immediately made moves to sign the band. The first result of this collaboration was the Head EP, a classic collection of cover versions of rare 60's US psych classics performed in On Trial's own imitable style... New Day Rising is the brand new album out on Delerium Records. With it, this band are set to prove their worth as one of the most credible European psych/rock bands of the year. With soaring walls of vocal harmony creating a mixture of ball busting heavy rock and pure psycheedelia this album escapes genres and re-invents modern acid rock. The true brilliance of New Day Rising, coupled with a rolling schedule of European dates will soon leave everyone wondering what life was like without On Trial. |
